Vern Gosdin and Max D. BarnesChiseled in Stone was co-written by Vern Gosdin and  BMI Award-winning Iowa born songwriter Max D. Barnes who was one of Nashville's most talented songwriters of the 80's and 90's.

Max D. Barnes often quipped that “I learned more about songwriting from driving a semi than from any music classes that I ever took in high school”. In 1989, the writers won the Country Music Association’s prestigious Song Of The Year Award for 'Chiseled In Stone' co-written with Gosdin and inspired by the death of Barnes’ elder son, Duane, in 1975 and also inspired by The Voice's recent divorce.
